Hey, wait just a minute, she's saying something *good* about blogging?
I have written critically about the blogging community over the past year and I stand firm in my beliefs that the interest of marketers in our funny little world has had a negative impact. One of the benefits of increased interest and participation in the blogosphere, however, is the potential to use blogging to enact social change. The inimitable Cooper and Emily are leading the BlogHers Act in order to harness the power of the blogosphere. Currently they are looking to select:
1. The global issue that the BlogHer community wants to support
2. The top issues that the community wants addressed during the American presidential election in 2008.
Well, of course the second issue does not really speak to those of us in the great white north and so the gang over at Mommy Blogs Toronto has launched BlogHers Act Canada to run in tandem with the US efforts.
They are taking suggestions until July 8th. My vote is to improve life for Canadian children living below the poverty line by focusing on some specific asks of the federal government, namely: 1) demanding that the Child Tax Benefit be increased and not be clawed back by any of the provinces for families receiving welfare payments, 2) increasing the minimum wage and instilling the concept of a "living wage" minimum for companies bidding on government business. Some sort of tax break for single parents is critical too as an estimated 81% of families headed by single mothers live below the poverty line.
There are so many important issues we can collectively demand be addressed. Swing on over to MBT to put in your two cents and stay tuned to hear more.
As I've already told you, I think that your suggestions are great - and wonderfully, efficiently framed (as they need to be if we're to pursue them effectively). Thanks!
